Never reaches temperature
Preheat drags on, or the thermometer inside reads far below the setting.
Often points to
bake element, gas igniter, temperature sensor
Oven repair
Wall ovens, double ovens and range ovens, gas or electric
A Thanksgiving turkey still pink when it should be done, lasagna burnt underneath and cold on top, an oven that never climbs past 200°F. Tell us the make and whether it's gas or electric, and we book a time.

Symptoms
Set an oven thermometer on the centre rack and preheat to 350°F. What it reads after twenty minutes narrows down most of the faults below.
Preheat drags on, or the thermometer inside reads far below the setting.
Often points to
bake element, gas igniter, temperature sensor
Cookies dark on one tray and pale on the other, cakes rising lopsided.
Often points to
convection fan, broken element, worn door seal
Food burns at normal settings, or F10 or F2 shows up on the display.
Often points to
stuck relay, failed sensor, control board
Baking works fine, but the top element never glows.
Often points to
broil element, terminal wiring, relay
Self-clean ended hours ago and the latch is still engaged, or the door gaps at the top.
Often points to
door lock motor, hinges, door gasket
It clicks, waits, then lights with a soft thump, or never lights at all.
Often points to
weak hot-surface igniter, gas safety valve
Typical causes
Electric or gas, every oven needs a heat source and a way to measure that heat. When either one drifts, dinner shows it.
On an electric oven the lower element does most of the baking and the upper one broils. A blister or split in the metal sheath ends its life.
What you notice
A visible bubble or break on the element, slow preheat, a cold broiler.
What gets checked
Resistance is measured on each element and the terminals behind the back wall are inspected.
A thin probe at the back of the cavity reports the heat to the control. When its readings drift, the oven aims for the wrong number.
What you notice
Undercooking or overcooking at the same setting, sensor codes like F3 on GE.
What gets checked
Its resistance at room temperature is compared with the manufacturer's chart.
In a gas oven, a hot-surface igniter must draw enough current to open the gas valve. As it ages, it still glows orange but can't open the valve.
What you notice
A long delay before lighting, or a glowing igniter and no flame.
What gets checked
Current draw is checked with a clamp meter, because the glow alone tells you very little.

FAQ
Not sure what your oven is telling you? Call (289) 670-3413 and describe it.
Self-clean runs the cavity at roughly 900°F for hours. On an older oven that heat is hard on the door lock, thermal fuse and control board, and it's a common moment for one of them to fail. A baking soda paste is gentler.
On many Frigidaire and Electrolux ranges, F10 points to runaway temperature: the oven got hotter than the control expected. Switch off the breaker and call rather than keep using it.
Many digital ovens have a temperature offset in the settings menu, usually adjustable by about 35°F either way. If it's further off than that, the sensor or an element likely needs attention.
Yes, single and double wall ovens. Built-in units take time to slide out of the cabinet, so mention the setup when you book.
Leave the house, don't touch light switches, and call Enbridge Gas or 911 from outside. Book the repair once the gas utility says it's safe.
